Quiet Practice Growth
Practical strategies to help you grow a sustainable, ethical and fulfilling private practice.
A gentler approach to business development for clinicians, therapists and private practitioners.
Business development is truly just the art of tending to the relationships that sustain your practice. It is about the meaningful conversations you have with supervisors, GPs, schools, and psychiatrists. By nurturing these connections with local services and fellow therapists, you create a steady, ethical flow of word-of-mouth referrals through community care.
Why this guide exists
Most clinicians are not short of clinical skill, but short of time and headspace for anything that looks like “business development”.
- “I know I should be doing something, but I don’t know where to start. ”
- “I don’t want to be salesy or pushy.”
- “I’m exhausted and the idea of learning business development makes me want to lie down.”
This guide is a gentler, realistic way to think about practice growth.
A softer definition of business development
Reframe business development as looking after the relationships and conversations that keep a practice alive, with examples like colleagues and supervisors, psychiatrists, GPs, therapists, schools, rehabs, services, communities and word-of-mouth referrals.
What usually gets in the way
List the three barriers (I don’t want to bother people / I don’t know what to say / I don’t have time) and the gentler alternatives: short, human messages; simple templates; one small action a week is enough.
What “enough” can look like
Explain that one or two small actions per week can be enough, with examples (one thank-you email, one reconnecting note, one follow-up after an event) and the idea of quiet, cumulative impact.
One small step this week
Invite the reader to think of one person who has referred someone to them, or someone they’d genuinely like to reconnect with, and send a short three-line email. Emphasise that this is a gentle, realistic first step.
Hi [Name],
I just wanted to say thank you for thinking of me / it was really good to meet you at [event].
I really appreciate it.
Best wishes,
[Your name]
Encourage them to start with this one small action and see it as “enough” for this week.
Meet Nick Hazell
Many clinicians feel they shouldn’t bother others, don't know what to say, or lack the time. We replace these hurdles with gentle, human messages and simple templates that feel natural. Success is not about being loud; it means taking one or two small actions a week—like a single thank-you note or a brief follow-up—to build a quiet, cumulative impact over time.
